Thin places – physical places with spiritual significance.

Thin Places Travel emphasizes trips that combine mind, body, and spirit. Its name comes from the Celtic understanding that in some places the line separating this world from the transcendent world is very thin, encouraging easy crossings. Our tours are designed for reflective people on their own pilgrimages through life who are interested in others who have gone before.

These tours are not academic, but they are for people who like books and ideas. Readings are suggested for preparing for each trip, and there are frequent talks, guided tours, and times for discussion. No tests or papers, but lots of good conversation.

Daniel Taylor and his wife, Jayne, have led many student and adult trips to places around the world, ranging from Britain, Western and Eastern Europe and Australia to Cuba, Guatemala, and Brazil. We are presently in an hiatus from leading further tours. You are welcomed to ask to be added to the contact list if you wish, but no future tours are on the horizon. If we decide otherwise, this will be announced on the website and to our contact list.

Castles and Cathedrals:
A Pilgrimage to Canterbury and Beyond

June 2-12, 2023

Join us on a ten-day exploration of England and Scotland. Emphasizing pilgrimage and the introduction of Christianity to Britain from Rome and Ireland, the tour begins in Canterbury and traces faith’s spread north to Lindisfarne, where it meets Celtic Christianity arriving from Ireland by way of Scotland. We will explore some of the great cathedrals—Canterbury, York, and Durham, some of the great castles—Dover, Bamburgh, and Edinburgh, and perhaps a great country estate such as Burleigh House. And meet historic figures such as Augustine (not the one you’re thinking of), Anselm (Archbishop of Canterbury), Becket (Canterbury martyr), Cranmer (Book of Common Prayer), Henry VIII, James I (of KJV fame), John Knox, and Celtic saints Aiden and Cuthbert. Great cities, beautiful countryside, a rich history, and engaging fellow travelers!

Led by Dr. Daniel Taylor, author and Professor Emeritus of Literature (Bethel University), and his wife Jayne. Cost estimated to be $2,600 to $2,900 per person (two people sharing accommodations) plus airfare. Numbers will be limited to keep the group a relatively intimate size. If you wish to obtain an application or be kept informed of further details as they develop, please contact Daniel Taylor.
